The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) approved December 31, 2019 as the date any installation of new and replacement sign supports must meet new crash-testing standards.
The standards, presented in AASHTO's Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH), lay out the guidelines for what crash-testing highway safety features need to be met on the National Highway System.
"The nation's motor vehicle fleet continues to evolve and our roadside hardware must keep pace," said Bud Wright, AASHTO executive director in a statement released late last year. "... It's important that ASSHTO and the transportation safety community support the design and manufacture of roadside devices that meet the safety needs of America's changing vehicle fleet."

The test (3-62), conducted by the Texas A&M Transportation Institue, analyzed three key criteria during the vehicle crash-test:
- Structural adequacy of the u-channel sign post

Local municipalities and state DOTs installing new or replacing existing sign posts after Dec. 31, 2019 that don't meet the MASH requirements may expose themselves to future liability risks.
